Get your above ground pool involved this Halloween and conjure up even more spooky fun! Whether you’re hosting a party or just looking to get into the seasonal spirit, these creative ideas help give your pool a monstrous makeover worthy of the Addams Family. Let’s dive into the terrifying tricks…
Set the Mood
Halloween lighting is crucial for maintaining the right ambience. Start by covering garden lights with colored cellophane paper or use LED inflatables to create a ghostly glow. Place LED candles around the pool area for an eerie flicker, while staying fire hazard-free – just like these DIY pool noodle candles.
Halloween Pool Noodle “Candles”
What You Need
- 1 old pool noodle
- 1 can black spray paint
- 2 tapered candles
- Battery-operated black tea lights
- Scissors
- Cardboard
- Ribbon
How to DIY
- Start by cutting your pool noodles into 3–6-inch sections in varying sizes. There is no need to be exact.
- Carefully use the scissors and create a shallow center at the top of each pool noodle to hold each of the tea lights.
Note: Only adults should complete this next step. Do not hold the flame directly to any surface.
- Create a creepy candle vibe, light a tapered candle and hold it at least 5 inches above the top of the pool noodle. Let the wax drip onto the top of each pool noodle and down the sides. Allow the wax to harden.
- Cut pieces of cardboard into circles to use as the base for your pool noodle candles.
- Spray paint the cardboard bases and the pool noodles completely black. Allow to dry fully.
- Glue the pool noodle sections to the cardboard.
- When the wax has dried, place your tea lights into the grooves you’ve made at the top of the pool noodles.
- Place your pool noodle candles in a bunch and tie them together with a ribbon or string.

Haunting Hits
Create a playlist filled with haunted house sounds, creepy nightlife effects and Halloween classics like Monster Mash. Set up a portable speaker hidden around the pool area so that everyone is transported to Dracula’s castle as soon as they step outside.
Floating Frights
An above ground pool is the perfect canvas for floating decorations. You can go organic and fill the pool with carved pumpkins or use fake skeleton bones. DIY floating ghosts are a simple yet effective project. Simply take old white fabric or sheets and add faces with marker pen or fabric paint. Then drape them over beach balls and place them in the pool. Your swimming pool will look like the perfect ghostly gathering!

Creepy Crawlies
To create the illusion of spider webs, use decorative gauze or cheesecloth found at any hobby store. These are both stretchy enough to cut and drape around the bushes or trees in your yard. Stretch the web across the railings or even over lounge chairs. Then add some fake spiders for an extra scare! This simple trick is a quick way to make your pool area look even more ghoulish.
