Spring Cleaning Checklist for Above Ground Pools

Posted by Team Funsicle

Before cannonballing into summer fun, it’s time to wake up your above ground pool from winter hibernation. With this comprehensive spring-cleaning checklist, opening your pool for the season is easier than ever.

A. Inspect the Pool

  1. Look for any rust, loose parts or cracks in the frame and liner.
  2. Check the ground below for shifting soil or soft spots.
  3. Inspect the stored pump, filter, and hoses for leaks, cracks, or wear.
  4. Repair or replace damaged items to prevent injuries and wear.
B. Clean Everything

  1. Use a pool brush to scrub debris from the pool walls and floor.
  2. Clean all accessories including the pool pump, ladder and cover.
  3. Clean the skimmer and pump basket to remove any obstructions.
C. Balance the Water Chemistry

  1. If the pool is empty: Clean the liner and treat any stains or deposits before filling.
  2. If the pool is not empty: Begin testing as soon as the water reaches a usable depth.
  3. Keep the pH in the normal swim range so the sanitizer works well.
  4. Maintain alkalinity at a moderate level to help keep the pH steady.
  5. Keep the calcium levels within a safe range to protect the pool from softening or scaling.
  6. Stabilizer (if using chlorine): Use a typical outdoor pool level so chlorine remains effective in sunlight.
  7. Sanitizer: Choose a chlorine or non‑chlorine sanitizer.

Tip: Test frequently during the first days after filling and adjust gradually.

D. Test Run the Filtration Cycle

  1. Reassemble the filter and pump.
  2. Prime the pump if required and check for air locks.
  3. Run the pump for 24–48 hours continuously with the cleaner chemistry in place to bring water into balance.
  4. If you use a saltwater system: Verify salt levels and cell cleanliness. Then run a test kit to confirm salinity and free chlorine levels.
E. Safety Check

  1. Ensure the ladder and other safety features are stable and securely attached.
  2. Check the pool perimeter for trip hazards from hoses or pump cords.
  3. Keep cords and power sources away

We also recommend getting started on a weekly maintenance routine. A little upkeep means clearer water, happier equipment, and way more backyard fun. Prep smart and your pool (and guests) will thank you!
