For Endurance Athlete Ted Lomicka, Your Fifties Are Just the Beginning

Posted by Cori Linder

Edward "Ted" Lomicka’s lifestyle is not what you’d expect from someone in his 50s. In fact, just from the optics, you’d likely assume he’s thriving in his 20s. That’s because on any given weekend, Ted is pushing his physical limits—whether he’s cycling, running, or swimming for miles at a time, often well over 100 miles. His resume of accomplishments is, frankly, staggering: dozens of IRONMAN triathlons, ultra-distance events, marathon swims, and over 100 cold-water plunges.

Based in Franklin, TN, Ted is more than just an athlete. He’s a husband, father, health care executive, college professor, and endurance triathlete with an unrelenting passion for pushing boundaries. A member of the USA Triathlon (USAT) organization and a Certified IRONMAN Coach, Ted has made endurance sports a cornerstone of his life. He’s competed in prestigious events like an IRONMAN World Championship and is a finisher of five ultra-distance triathlons, including the ULTRAMAN and ANVIL races.

Ted’s philosophy of life—Dream Big. Live the Dream. Share the Dream.—is reflected in everything he does, from his professional work to his athletic pursuits.

Why Cold Plunging Became Part of the Routine

Ted’s athletic journey goes beyond medals and milestones. His early years were spent SCUBA diving for fun, developing a passion for water and the discipline it requires. It wasn’t until his mid-30s, however, that he discovered endurance racing. What sparked the change? An adventure in the Red Sea. That moment challenged his perception of what his body could accomplish, leading him to sign up for his first triathlon. That single decision ignited a passion for testing his limits in ways he never thought possible.

Over the years, Ted’s training has incorporated more than just traditional methods. Cold plunging has become a key part of his recovery and mental resilience routine. Having completed over 100 plunges, he views it as transformative—not only for muscle recovery but also for mental clarity. “Plunging is an opportunity to reset. It teaches you to embrace discomfort and come out stronger,” Ted explains.
