An above ground pool is one of the most convenient ways to cool off during summer. And since over 40% of residential pools in the U.S. are above ground, it’s clear many homeowners agree. However, pool maintenance can put a dampener on the non-stop fun. That’s why we’ve compiled all our insider knowledge and simplified it into this essential cheat sheet for every pool owner out there. Read on and find out how to keep your pool experience positive and problem-free.
Pool Covers Aren’t Just for Leaves
Pool covers are made for keeping leaves, insects and other debris out, but did you know that they also help prevent algae blooms? These form when sunlight and warmer temperatures provide optimal conditions for algae growth, leaving your pool a no-go area. A durable pool cover solves this issue by shading the water, preventing sunlight and reducing the water temperature. We recommend using a pool cover any time you aren’t using your pool.

The 10/60 Rule
Pool maintenance should never take up all your time, especially when there is relaxing to do. The 10/60 Rule suggests taking 10 minutes each day or 60 minutes (1 hour) per week to maintain your above ground pool.
Ten Minute Maestro Schedule: “Get In, Get Out”
- Skim the Surface (2 minutes): Use a skimmer net to remove leaves and debris from the water.
- Check Water Level (1 minute): Ensure the water level is at the midpoint of the skimmer. Add water if necessary.
- Test Water Chemistry (3 minutes): Use a testing kit to check pH and chlorine levels – adjust as needed.
- Brush the Walls (2 minutes): Quickly brush the sides and bottom to prevent algae buildup with a sturdy pool brush.
- Empty Skimmer and Pump Baskets (2 minutes): Remove any debris from the skimmer and pump baskets to maintain flow and efficiency.
One Hour Winner Schedule: ”One and Done"
- Skim the Surface (5 minutes): Start by skimming the pool to remove debris.
- Brush the Walls and Floor (10 minutes): Thoroughly brush the sides and bottom of the pool to dislodge any dirt or algae.
- Vacuum the Pool (15 minutes): Use a pool vacuum to clean the floor and remove any settled debris.
- Check and Adjust Water Levels (5 minutes): Ensure the water level is correct. Top off if necessary.
- Test Water Chemistry (10 minutes): Use a testing kit to check pH, chlorine, and alkalinity. Adjust chemicals accordingly.
- Clean Skimmer and Pump Baskets (5 minutes): Remove and clean any debris from the skimmer and pump baskets.
- Run the Filter (10 minutes): After cleaning, run the filter for at least 30 minutes to circulate and clarify the water.

Every Pool Party Needs a Foot Bath
No one wants to swim in water that resembles a swamp – but it can be hard to prevent when there’s kids playing, dogs jumping and backyard games all happening at once. With this mighty foot bath, you can avoid any party fouls and keep water free from mud, grass and who-knows-what. Nothing says VIP experience more than pristine water. Plus, it saves time when it comes to pool cleaning.

Owl Aboard
In some backyards, birds enjoy hanging out by the pool or in the trees above it, leading to pesky poop and feather problems. A pool cover works up to a point, but the secret trick to banishing birds entirely from your pool area is an owl! Not a real one – the realistic decoys you see at outdoor garden centers. We suggest getting an owl and placing it near the pool, then watch as the neighborhood birds notice the owl and wisely move on.
Whirlpool Wonder
A hack for easily skimming debris and fine particles is to create a whirlpool. It’s also just super fun. You will need a skimmer and pool vacuum for this.
The Simple Technique
- Use your leaf skimmer like an oar to guide the water in circles as you walk around the perimeter of the pool for about 5 minutes.
- Once you've created a consistent whirlpool, stop and walk the opposite way for another 5 minutes.
- The current will draw any debris and fine sand particles to the center of the pool.
- Use the leaf skimmer to scoop up gathered debris and a vacuum to remove the dirt from the pool floor.
